Physical and chemical properties

Paraffin Wax: White solid, density 0.87-0.92 g/cm3, melting point 55-65 ℃

Polyethylene Wax: Polyethylene Wax, white solid, density 0.91-0.95g/cm3, melting point 90-115℃

Polyethylene wax and wax in color masterbatch performance differences in the process of exploration, in the field of the masterbatch production, add paraffin and polyethylene wax can improve the liquidity of the polymer material, by improving the wettability of the pigments and additives and decentralization and improve the processing performance of different level to improve the production efficiency, and the product of the apparent good gloss. Therefore, many manufacturers use paraffin wax with melting point of 60℃ or so as dispersant or polyethylene wax, in order to improve output and reduce costs. Now we observe the performance difference between them from the perspective of the practical application of color masterbatch processing.

(1) Thermal performance

The lubricating dispersant used for color masterbatch must be able to bear the processing temperature better during the manufacture of color masterbatch and the molding of colored products to maintain the thermal stability of materials; Otherwise, gasification or decomposition of dispersants will adversely affect the performance of the masterbatch or product. The processing temperature of masterbatch and products is generally between 160-220℃. We conducted isothermal thermograin-loss experiments on polyethylene wax and paraffin wax with melting point of 60℃. The results showed that below 200℃, the weight of paraffin wax was pushed 9.57% within 4min and the weight loss reached 20% within 10min.***** from the heat resistance point of view, polyethylene wax can show a good heat resistance, paraffin is difficult to ensure, so paraffin is not suitable for use as color masterbatch dispersant.

(2) Dispersion performance

In order to compare the dispersibility of polyethylene wax and paraffin wax, black masterbatch with different concentration was prepared and the film blackness test was carried out. The results show that the black masterbatch film blackness increases by 36.7% with the increase of polyethylene wax content in 0-7% addition ratio, indicating that the higher the content of polyethylene wax, the better the dispersion of carbon black. However, in the same proportion, with the increase of paraffin, the black masterbatch film blackness decreased by 19.9%, indicating that the higher the paraffin content, the worse the dispersion performance of carbon black.

This is because paraffin wax wets carbon black more easily than polyethylene wax, but at the same time greatly reduces the viscosity of the system. The low viscosity greatly weakens the shear force transfer and interferes with the dispersion. The carbon black is coated on the surface of paraffin and forms larger particles of carbon black aggregates. Obviously, the effect of this hindering dispersion greatly exceeds its effect of weakening the cohesion of aggregates. Therefore, the comparison of the experimental results shows that polyethylene wax has a good lubrication and dispersion effect on carbon black, but in the masterbatch, the carbon black with paraffin wax will be significantly worse.
